Work Christmas Party do's and don’ts
As the Christmas party season rolls around, we find our social calendars filling up fast. You might be new to your role or never attended a Christmas party before so let us highlight our major do’s and don’ts.
Do’s:
- Attend. Try and make sure you put in the effort to show up, spending time with your co-workers outside of work hours is a great chance to actually get to know them personally. Even if you aren’t a big drinker, the least you can do is show up – on the plus side, you will probably get a free meal out of it.
- Use your time at the party to build relationships, this can make your work life a lot more fun and interesting. Speak to co-workers that you might not usually speak to in your day-to-day tasks.
- Skip the work chat. It is hard to avoid speaking about the one thing you have in common with your co-workers, but step out of that chat and ask them about what they like to do outside of work, who knows you might find a new golf partner.
Don’ts:
- Don’t use the office party as an excuse to complain and whine about the year that has been. If you have had a hard year, then more than likely your co-workers have too. Use this party to shake it off and reset.
- Don’t do anything that sober you wouldn’t. Yes, this is easier said than done but there is no hiding when you have to see them all again in the office in the new year.
- Don’t get yourself into controversial conversations (religion, politics, covid) as mixed with a few too many drinks they may not go down too well. The last thing you want is a disagreement to blow up or awkwardness in the office.
- Don’t mix drinks: it’s a sure-fire way of getting white girl wasted before home time and embarrassing yourself in front of your superiors. (Those who are sober will definitely remember this)
- Don’t use the Christmas party to hassle your boss for a promotion. (need we explain more?)
